The Big Sandy Area Child Advocacy Center was founded in 1999 and opened its doors to its current location in Pikeville, Kentucky in July 2001. The Center is named “Judi’s Place for Kids” in honor of former First Lady of Kentucky and native of Pikeville, Judi Patton. Mrs. Patton has long worked on behalf of child victims of abuse. It is the mission of the Big Sandy Area Child Advocacy Center to lessen the trauma experienced by the child victim of abuse by providing a child-friendly center with a warm, home like, supportive environment where intervention efforts can be offered to reduce the stress to the abused child and parent or adult caregiver. The Center further commits to raise public awareness for the need to stop and prevent physical and sexual abuse against innocent children. The Big Sandy Area Child Advocacy Center serves the Big Sandy Area Development District, which is comprised of Pike, Johnson, Floyd, Martin, and Magoffin Counties in the easternmost region of the Commonwealth. The Center serves both child victims of sexual abuse and physical abuse. The following services and programs are currently offered: comprehensive medical examinations, forensic interviews, mental health therapy, case management, court advocacy, personal advocacy, Kids-In-Court, support group for non-offending caregivers, multidisciplinary team coordination and case review. Referrals are accepted from law enforcement agencies in the region and the Department for Protection and Permanency. You may reach Judi’s Place for Kids at 866-437-7447 for additional information or visit us online at www.judisplace.org .
