The Barren River Area Child Advocacy Center (BRACAC) opened its doors in January 2001 and serves victims of child sexual abuse and their non-offending family members and/or caregivers living in the ten counties of the Barren River Area Development District (Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Hart, Logan, Metcalfe, Monroe, Simpson and Warren). It is the mission of the BRACAC to reduce trauma to child abuse victims by providing one safe, child-friendly location where teams of professionals work together to pursue justice and offer treatment. This is accomplished by working in partnership with the Multidisciplinary Team professionals of each of the ten counties, which include law enforcement of all jurisdictions, Department for Community Based Services, County and Commonwealth’s Attorneys, Victim Advocates, and mental health and medical professionals. The Center’s two Crisis Intervention Counselors split coverage of the region’s ten counties to provide children and families with support, coordination and tracking of all services provided at the Center and through the Multidisciplinary Teams. The Center has three child-friendly interview rooms for its Forensic Interviewer or an investigator to conduct child-friendly forensic interviews and a pediatric medical unit and physicians trained in the medical evaluation of child sexual abuse to provide comprehensive medical examinations to children, when needed. The Center’s therapists provide crisis intervention and counseling, on-going mental health counseling/treatment and referrals to other mental health providers in the region to connect children and families to services as soon as possible. In addition, the Center provides a host of other services such as educational and support groups for child victims and parents and/or non-offending caregivers, preparation for court and assistance with claims for Crime Victim Compensation. The BRACAC also sponsors various training and continuing education workshops throughout the year to further and strengthen the work of the professionals who work with victims of child sexual abuse and their non-offending family members living in the BRADD community. For more information please call (270) 783-4357. Photos and additional information about the Center and services is also available at www.bracac.org. |
